Rowing fever at De Bosbaan: Okeanos prepares for historic World Rowing Championships and vibrant Student Day
AMSTERDAM – In just one month, De Bosbaan will turn into the epicenter of the international rowing world. For student rowing club Okeanos, the World Rowing Championships represent a home game on an unprecedented scale. “Everyone in the hallways is talking about it,” board members Arjen Knoppert and Swante van Beek share enthusiastically.
It promises to be a unique spectacle on Amsterdam’s rowing waters, fondly considered by members as ‘their’ Bosbaan. The venue is currently undergoing a thorough metamorphosis: from large-scale dredging works and new pontoons to the renovation of the grass stands and boathouses. The elite sports atmosphere is alive more than ever, especially since Okeanos’ very own Tinka Offereins, Hermijntje Drenth, Cornelus Palsma, and Erik van Eijck van Heslinga will be rowing for medals on the water.
Student Day at De Bosbaan
While the battle for medals will rage on for days, Amsterdam students are particularly looking forward to Thursday of the tournament: the official Student Day. Okeanos describes this day as the perfect synergy between elite sports and vibrant Amsterdam student life.
“Visitors can expect a day packed with rowing action, but also a taste of real student life,” Arjen explains. On Thursday, the event site will be filled with stages, bars, and a great atmosphere. At the same time, Okeanos is bridging the gap to the sport in an accessible way. Featuring rowing machines (ergometers) and fun student-friendly activities, the club is offering clinics to get newcomers excited about rowing. It is the chance for students to experience the unique vibe and chat with rowing veterans.
“De Bosbaan is Ours”
The absolute highlight for the club is being able to cheer on their own top athletes, who previously snatched gold in Paris, right on their home turf. The club fundraiser, through which members boost the club treasury via ticket purchases, is heating up, and the sense of unity is tangible.
Swante, who will take over the board leadership next year, hopes Student Day will inspire a new generation as well. She spontaneously joined the club herself after attending a party. Her advice for students who are still hesitant? “Just come and give it a try. Come to Student Day on Thursday, hop on an ergometer, and soak in the atmosphere. You’ll gain friends for life and a fantastic sense of community in return.”
With everyone aligned and a beautifully renovated De Bosbaan on the horizon, Okeanos is completely ready: “De Bosbaan is ours, and we will definitely be there to cheer our rowers on to gold.”
