Staatsloterij World Rowing Championships a huge medal success for TeamNL: ‘Olympic level’
With ten medals for the Netherlands – four of them gold – and an ‘immense rowing craze’, the Staatsloterij World Rowing Championships at the Bosbaan has become a major success. The event drew a total of 38,500 spectators.
Following 1977 and 2014, this was the third time the World Championships were held in Amsterdam. For the Netherlands, it was a triumph from a sporting perspective as well. In total, TeamNL Rowing secured ten medals. Gold went to the women’s quadruple sculls, the men’s double sculls, and today to the men’s eight (Holland Acht) and the mixed double sculls. The medal tally also included three silvers and three bronzes, earning the Netherlands first place in the overall medal table.
Pride
The Royal Dutch Rowing Federation looks back on the Staatsloterij World Rowing Championships with pride. “The outstanding performances by TeamNL Rowing and the immense rowing craze sparked across the Netherlands by this championship make us very proud as a federation. The media interest in our sport, and certainly the enthusiasm of the many spectators here at the Bosbaan, have demonstrated just how popular rowing is. What’s more, this World Championship truly succeeded in uniting the entire rowing community. That gives us the confidence to continue building toward a bright future, both in grassroots sports and at the elite level,” said Nicolien Nicolai, Managing Director of the Royal Dutch Rowing Federation.

Organizer TIG Sports & Events is also pleased with how the Staatsloterij World Rowing Championships unfolded. At the Staatsloterij World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, the top three of all finals received a special podium reception for the first time—similar to the end of a Formula 1 race—allowing rowers to celebrate their success immediately with family and friends. Additionally, this was the first World Championship to provide spectacular television footage using drone cameras and compact onboard cameras.
